Our Urban Growing Training scheme

One of the key challenges facing us in terms of creating a local food supply is the lack of skilled urban growers. Our training scheme addresses this.

2012 Apprentice Sarah harvesting

Growing Communities is helping to 'grow more growers' through our training scheme, which runs from the beginning of April to September every year. Each year we take on around four volunteer trainees who work with our growers Sophie and Ximena, learning how to run an urban organic market gardens. They also help to harvest and pack our award-winning Hackney Salad for the Growing Communities weekly veg scheme, and attend monthly tutorials.

To date more than 20 people have been through our training scheme, including our former grower Sara Davies, our current head grower Sophie Verhagen and our Dagenham grower Shelagh Martin.

Many of our trainees have gone on to run their own growing sites as part of our Patchwork Farm across Hackney.

We normally advertise for new apprentices in late January or February.
