Why choose Growing Communities?
Community-led: We are London's first community-led fruit and veg bag scheme run by local people, based in Hackney.
Local and seasonal: We source as much local produce as possible: our Hackney salad is grown on our Soil Association certified Patchwork Farm right here in the heart of the city. Tell me more. Most of our vegetables - and our apples and pears - come from small farms in Kent, Essex and East Anglia and our oranges come from cooperatives in Italy and Spain. Last year, 62% of our vegetables and 23% of the fruit in our fruit bags came direct from local farms while overall 88% of our vegetables came from the UK. We never buy air-freighted produce or produce from heated greenhouses. Only our Fair Trade organic bananas come from outside Europe.
Fair: We help to support over 25 small-scale organic farmers and growers by providing them with a regular outlet and a fair price for their produce. Several of our producers - Ripple Farm in Kent, Adrian Izzard in Cambs and Sarah Green in Essex also sell at our Stoke Newington Farmers' Market.
Not for profit: We are committed to building real alternatives to the current damaging food system. Tell me more.
Low-carbon: We are committed to cutting food miles and are a collection-only scheme. Tell me more.
Accessible: The bag scheme accepts Healthy Start vouchers and we offer a discount for pensioners.
Keeping you informed: We send you a weekly e-newsletter with recipes and a full list of where your fruit and vegetables have come from (to see some past issues, have a look at our archive). You can also check what's in the bags on-line before collecting.
More than a box scheme: When you sign up to a regular fruit or veg bag you become a member of Growing Communities. Members attend the AGM and have a say in how the fruit and veg bag scheme is run. Bag scheme members usually pay by direct debit which allows us to plan ahead and helps keep admin costs down. Being a member of our bag scheme is not just about delicious fruit and vegetables, it's about being part of an organisation that's trying to change what we eat, how we eat and how it's farmed.
Find out more about what it's like being on the bag scheme on these blogs: Eat Wise, London Plains and Wholefood Kitchen. All are by bag scheme members.
Our veg scheme is certified organic (Soil Association GB-ORG-05)
