On Saturday 14 October, we'll be holding Apple Day at the farmers' market, with traditional games, such as apple bobbing (both line-bobbing and using a water bath - towels will be provided!). There will be a raffle to win a basket of market goodies and a chance to make and try your own fresh-pressed juice.
The day will also be a celebration of urban harvests - especially from our own organic Dagenham Farm. Trainees from the Grown in Dagenham programme will be showing us all that they have grown and made on the 1.4 acre East London farm.
They are already experts at making DagenJAM in fabulous flavours such as rhubarb & chai and strawberry & geranium, as well as chutneys and Tommy K ketchup. And trainees Paul, Layla, Jill and Nikki are testing their chilli sauce recipes as we write. Come and take part in a blind tasting at the market in Apple Day and see which recipe you prefer.
And, of course, there will be all the usual fantastic produce on sale from the local organic farmers and food producers who come to the market every week. Peach & Pippin, our newest recruits, will be showcasing many varieties of apples from their smallholding in Essex, while Pear Necessities will have pears, juice and chutney from their orchard in Kent. And Anthony Ferguson from Niko B chocolates will doubtless be cooking up some seasonal toffee-and-chocolate-coated treats.
The event runs from 10am till 2.30pm in front of St Paul's Church on Stoke Newington Road, N16 7UY.
