Sustainable fish at the market

At long last we have a new sustainable fish supplier at the farmers' market.

David Price of South Coast Seafayre brings super-fresh and tasty fish to the market from Kent.

Kenny Thomas started fishing around Rye in Kent more than 40 years ago, and he and David started selling direct to the public around 12 years ago. Kenny has now retired from day-to-day fishing but his brother Dave and his son Joe fish from small inshore day boats (the Doreen T and Annalusion, respectively) around Rye and Hythe and land the catch straight onto the beach at Dungeness. (His daughter Kelly also runs an excellent Snack Shack on the beach if you're ever in the area.)

They use only sustainable fishing methods, such as static net fishing using different sized nets to target different species, minimising discards. Joe also pots for crab, lobster and whelks, depending on the season.

They also smoke their own fish, including seabass, cod, mackerel, mullet and gurnard.

The fish at the market will vary each week, depending on the season and the weather.

David will be at the farmers' market every Saturday.
